I was so proud of myself when I figured out how to make this, but there were some problems: the image was too wide, the entire thing was too long, and that the dj I made it for probably wouldn’t ever wear it. I held onto to it because it represented a lot of things that I learned.
I never knew what a 45 adapter was before this dj. I didn’t know a lot of things about that whole world–scratch live, turntablism, the dirt club owners far too often try to pull, being friends with everyone when the beats are vibrating through you and drinks come one after the next, how fabulous and ridiculous 2-3 parties a week, for months, can feel. When I wasn’t interested, I turned back to my thing, being crafty. I figured out how to do fair-isle knitting. I discovered how to make myself happy, after the music ends and the lights come on… and I have a whole bunch of completed projects.
This piece holds lingering memories I haven’t quite figured out how to let go of. Maybe, if I just let go of this thing, then I won’t be reminded of all those thoughts quite so often.
